For the Year 1831 Having received, at a late hour, only a portion of the work of Dr. Paris (in sheets), we can scarcely be called upon, in our present Number, to od'er any decided opinion on its merits. We shall therefore confine ourselves to the selection of such extracts from the first portion of the volume as relate to the earlier period of the extraordinary character whose memoirs it records. The late Humphry Dav-y (says his bio grapher) was born at the town of Penzance, in Cornwall, on the 17th of December 1788. Were we seriously to say what we think of this production, it would be What is scarcely tolerable to pronounce, and impossible to endure. If meant for ridicule it is infamous, and we should without ceremony apply to it those epithets which a distinguished statesman has applied to another anonymous scribble. For we hum bly conceive that occasion justifies strong language; and that when you really address a scoundrel, liar, coward, and assassin, there are no words but these four which can express what is meant, and therefore that these words are not only not vulgar, but the only words that can be used to convey your meaning. However, it is very well for rascals, who do not like to be called by their names, to protest against the im politeness of employing strong phrases.
