Plant Systematics has made a substantial contribution to plant systematics courses at the upper-undergraduate and first year graduate level. The halophytes are highly specialized plants, which have greater tolerance to salt. They can germinate, grow and reproduce successfully in saline areas which would cause the death of regular plants. Most halophytic species are found in salt marsh systems along seashores or around landlocked inland lakes and flat plains with high evaporation. The halophytes play very significant role in the saline areas specially in the coast by overcoming the salinity in different ways, viz. with regulating mechanisms in which excess salts are excreted and with out regulating mechanism, which may include succulents or cumulative types. Besides that they protect coast from erosion and cyclones, provide feeding ground and nursery for fish, shrimps and birds. Halophytes get increasing attention today because of the steady increase of the salinity in irrigation systems in the arid and semi-arid regions where the increasing population reaches the limits of freshwater availability. In many countries, halophytes have been successfully grown on saline wasteland to provide animal fodder and have the potential for rehabilitation and even reclamation of these sites. The value of certain salt-tolerant grass species has been recognized by their incorporation in pasture improvement programs in many salt affected regions throughout the world. There have been recent advances in selecting species with high biomass and protein levels in combination with their ability to survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including salinity.

English summary: The present catalogue of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) and liverworts (Marchantiophyta) is the first synopsis for these two plant kingdom phyla in Austria. As in other volumes of the Catalogus Florae Austriae, there are no keys and no descriptions of genera and species. On the other hand, ecology, phytosociology and distribution of all taxa are treated in detail. In the general part of this catalogue a historical survey and our present state of knowledge of horn- and liverworts in the federal states of the country are presented. A short "hepaticogeography" of Austria highlights the hepaticofloristic characteristics of its climatologically and geomorphologically very different landscapes. In the special part, all species, four hornworts and 260 liverworts, and a series of infraspecific taxa are presented in a uniform conception. Principally, nomenclature and systematics follow the new "World Checklist of Hornworts and Liverworts", apart from a few, reasoned exceptions. The sequence of families is systematical, that of genera alphabetical. Particular attention is given to species distribution, using data obtained from the extensive literature and the collections in public herbaria. In addition, an enormous number of unpublished records were included and many specimens critically revised. Detailed information on ecology and phytosociology rest primarily upon observations in Austria. The general decline of species diversity also affects Austria and its horn- and liverworts. Thus, the growing threats to species and their habitats are evaluated. Optional notes concern taxonomy and other topics. About 140 colour photos illustrate the treatments of selected species of horn- and liverworts. German description: Dieses Nachschlagewerk stellt die erste Synopsis des gesamten Wissens uber die Hornmoose (Anthocerotophyta) und Lebermoose (Marchantiophyta) Osterreichs dar. Der Tradition der Catalogus-Reihe folgend, enthalt es keine Artbeschreibungen oder Bestimmungsschlussel. Stattdessen wird der Okologie, der Soziologie und vor allem der Verbreitung der einzelnen Arten breiter Raum gewahrt. Im allgemeinen Teil wird uber die Erforschungsgeschichte und den aktuellen Kenntnisstand in den einzelnen Bundeslandern informiert. Grundlage fur die Verbreitungsangaben ist die Auswertung der gesamten Literatur und der offentlichen Sammlungen. Ausserdem konnte eine enorme Zahl unveroffentlichter Funde inkludiert werden, und viele Herbarbelege zu problematischen Meldungen wurden einer Revision unterzogen. Die detaillierten Angaben zur Okologie der Arten und ihrer phytosoziologischen Zugehorigkeit basieren primar auf Beobachtungen im Lande. Fur die Ellenberg-Zeigerwerte der Arten liegt eine vollig neue Bearbeitung vor. Da der zunehmende Artenschwund in Osterreich auch vor den Horn- und Lebermoosen nicht Halt macht, wird jede Art auch hinsichtlich ihrer Gefahrdung im Lebensraum beurteilt.
