Auch in Shakespeares grossen Tragodien, besonders aber in Macbeth, das allgemein als sein dusterstes und schaurigstes Drama bezeichnet wird, kommt der Imagination eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu, da sie hier in Form von Macbeths Einbildungskraft sowohl als Ausgangspunkt wie auch als Antriebskraft des gesamten Handlungsverlaufes fungiert. Das Werk stellt sich ebenso als Tragodie des Ehrgeizes und seiner Folgen dar wie als Charakterstudie eines uberaus komplex dargestellten Protagonisten, der sich im Verlauf des Stuckes von einem ehrbaren, tapferen und loyalen Vasallen des schottischen Konigs zu einem angstzerfressenen, blutrunstigen und skrupellosen Tyrannen wandelt, der sich von seiner ursprunglichen, eigentlich besseren Natur entfremdet und sich daraufhin ganz den Machten des Bosen uberantwortet. Auf der anderen Seite konnte man freilich argumentieren, das Drama entlarve im Laufe der Handlung erst die wahre, bosartige Natur Macbeths. Dem kann man sich allerdings nicht vorbehaltlos anschliessen, da nicht davon auszugehen ist, dass er all die guten Eigenschaften, die er zu Beginn unbestritten besitzt, so ohne weiteres nur vorgespielt haben kann. Hier muss sicherlich mehr dahinter stecken. Die treibende Kraft in seinem inneren Konflikt liegt in seiner nicht unterdruckbaren Imagnation, die, zusammen mit ihren Auswirkungen auf Macbeth und die Handlung des Dramas, in dieser Arbeit vor allem erortert werden soll.
