By talking through a hundred or so items, Mike Berners-Lee sets out to give us a carbon instinct for the footprint of literally anything we do, buy and think about. He helps us pick our battles by laying out the orders of magnitude. The book ranges from the everyday (foods, books, plastic bags, bikes, flights, baths...) and the global (deforestation, data centres, rice production, the World Cup, volcanoes, ...) Be warned, some of the things you thought you knew about green living may be about to be turned on their head. Never preachy but packed full of information and always entertaining.

Outdoor Adventure and Social Theory

Publisher: Routledge

ISBN: 1136292403

Category: Sports & Recreation

Page: 184

Adventure and outdoor sports - from rock climbing to freestyle kayaking – are a modern social phenomenon that can tell us much about the relationship between sport, culture and contemporary society. In this engaging new introductory text, adventure sports are used to illustrate key concepts in social theory and to demonstrate why an understanding of social theory is essential for any student taking a course in sport, adventure, or outdoor education. Each chapter in the book introduces a key ‘classical’ or modern social theorist, including Marx, Durkheim, Weber and Elias, or a universal topic or issue in social theory, such as sustainability, commodification or identity. Within each of those chapters the theorist or topic is brought to life through case studies of adventurous activities and lived experiences, helping the reader to connect their own sporting and adventurous interests with the frameworks we use to understand wider culture and society. Concise and full of cutting-edge contemporary examples, Outdoor Adventure and Social Theory is the perfect companion for any module on the sociology of sport, adventure or outdoor recreation.

THE DENIAL OF SCIENCE

Analysing climate change scepticism in the UK

Author: Martin Lack

Publisher: AuthorHouse

ISBN: 148178398X

Category: Political Science

Page: 174

This is not a book about climate science. Rather it analyses why some people dispute the reality, reliability and reasonableness of this science. The validity of the scientifi c consensus is therefore taken as a given, solely in order to analyse the views of climate change sceptics who dispute it. Nevertheless, most biological and environmental scientists do agree that the scale of much human activity now exceeds the capacity of our environment to sustain it, or to recycle the waste it generates. Using a river as a source of water, a laundry and a toilet may be possible if you live in a sparsely populated wilderness. If you live in a slum, however, it is likely to lead to your premature death. As such, many activities have become problematic simply because of the rate at which we are carrying them out. This includes pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore this book addresses the philosophical roots of scepticism, its possible misappropriation for ideological reasons, and the psychological causes of denial. It concludes by suggesting that ending this denial of science is an essential next step toward a sustainable future in a post-carbon era.

-- Herausgeber.

Sustainable Supply Chains

Models, Methods, and Public Policy Implications

Author: Tonya Boone,Vaidyanathan Jayaraman,Ram Ganeshan

A sustainable enterprise is one that contributes to sustainable development by simultaneously delivering economic, social and environmental benefits or what has been termed "the triple bottom line." While pursuing profit, socially responsible companies should be sensitive to the environment and uphold the rights of all the firm's stakeholders. This edited volume explores leading-edge ideas — both by academics and forward-thinking companies — to (re)design and market products, source, manufacture, and eventually distribute and recover or dispose of them in an environmentally, ecologically, and socially responsible way. This edited volume is made up of fifteen chapters loosely grouped into clusters. After an introduction, chapter 2 shows the greenhouse emissions at various levels, from countries all the way to individual products. Chapters 3-7 each focus on an industrial sector and address issues specific to that industry, with chapter 7 presenting a case study on LEED certification of Miller Hall, home of the Mason School of Business where two of the authors (Tonya and Ram) work. Chapters 8-10 address product take back in the supply chain. Chapter 8 introduces e-waste and surveys what firms are doing to combat it. Chapter 9 provides an overview of existing take-back legislation and academic papers that have studied various research questions associated with them. Chapter 10 is a tutorial that addresses the problem of product disposition on a closed-loop supply chain: what should a firm do with a product return? Chapters 11-15 address measurement, monitoring, decision-making, and reporting regarding environmental issues in a firm. Chapter 11 provides an academic survey of eco-labeling and the consumer’s willingness to pay for them. Chapter 12 discusses how firms can measure the total carbon footprint in their supply chains and some of the strategies they can use to mitigate carbon emissions. Using the price of call options, chapter 13 illustrates how managers can quantify the savings attributed to sustainability-related investment. Chapter 14 develops a non-linear optimization model that addresses the complex trade-offs involved in making joint operational and environmental decisions. Finally, chapter 15 develops a Data Envelopment Analysis-based method for supplier evaluation incorporating environmental and business factors.

The Innovative Use of Materials in Architecture and Landscape Architecture

History, Theory and Performance

Author: Caren Yglesias

Publisher: McFarland

ISBN: 0786470801

Category: Art

Page: 216

This book is about the materials used in the design of architecture, landscape architecture and the city. The fundamental properties and technical aspects are reviewed within a context of a material's history, the theories of its meaning and making, and its use. Information about the sustainability aspects of each material is included (as a critical necessity in construction). Innovative design comes from an understanding of materials for what they are, how they have been used in the past, and what they can do to support human activity. The author's intent is to provide essential information useful both to those studying materials and methods of construction for the first time and to seasoned professionals concerned with advancing their design at a time when the consumption of natural resources and the consequences of wasteful practices are of urgent concern.

Walking God's Earth

The Environment and Catholic Faith

Publisher: Liturgical Press

ISBN: 0814637345

Category: Religion

Page: 168

How does the Catholic tradition understand the significance of the environment, and what are the implications for our daily lives? In Walking God’s Earth, David Cloutier provides a concise, accessible, and spiritually engaging introduction to these questions. Cloutier emphasizes the importance of “finding our place” within God’s created order, showing how spiritual experiences and scriptural narratives guide us to a humble and realistic perspective, one that often clashes with the presumptions of society. In its focus on practical ways of living out this message, the book identifies key areas—food, fuel, dwelling places, work, and leisure—where Catholics can bring their faith convictions into daily living. We are called to handle the things of God’s creation in holy, sacramental ways, as an essential part of our vocation to live out our faith. Walking God’s Earth emphasizes the importance of connecting both spiritually and morally, our environmental lives with the basics of our faith in hope that God’s desire for “the renewal of the earth” may be realized in our own desires and in the practices of our communities.

Refrigeration Nation

A History of Ice, Appliances, and Enterprise in America

Author: Jonathan Rees

Publisher: JHU Press

ISBN: 1421411075

Category: History

Page: 248

Only when the power goes off and food spoils do we truly appreciate how much we rely on refrigerators and freezers. In Refrigeration Nation, Jonathan Rees explores the innovative methods and gadgets that Americans have invented to keep perishable food cold—from cutting river and lake ice and shipping it to consumers for use in their iceboxes to the development of electrically powered equipment that ushered in a new age of convenience and health. As much a history of successful business practices as a history of technology, this book illustrates how refrigeration has changed the everyday lives of Americans and why it remains so important today. Beginning with the natural ice industry in 1806, Rees considers a variety of factors that drove the industry, including the point and product of consumption, issues of transportation, and technological advances. Rees also shows that how we obtain and preserve perishable food is related to our changing relationship with the natural world.
