Essential Health Benefits:

Balancing Coverage and Cost

In 2010, an estimated 50 million people were uninsured in the United States. A portion of the uninsured reflects unemployment rates; however, this rate is primarily a reflection of the fact that when most health plans meet an individual's needs, most times, those health plans are not affordable. Research shows that people without health insurance are more likely to experience financial burdens associated with the utilization of health care services. But even among the insured, underinsurance has emerged as a barrier to care. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has made the most comprehensive changes to the provision of health insurance since the development of Medicare and Medicaid by requiring all Americans to have health insurance by 2016. An estimated 30 million individuals who would otherwise be uninsured are expected to obtain insurance through the private health insurance market or state expansion of Medicaid programs. The success of the ACA depends on the design of the essential health benefits (EHB) package and its affordability. Essential Health Benefits recommends a process for defining, monitoring, and updating the EHB package. The book is of value to Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) and other U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agencies, state insurance agencies, Congress, state governors, health care providers, and consumer advocates.

The Global Automotive Industry

Author: Paul Nieuwenhuis,Peter Wells

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons

ISBN: 1118802357

Category: Technology & Engineering

Page: 256

The automotive industry is still one of the world's largest manufacturing sectors, but it suffers from being very technology-focused as well as being relatively short-term focused. There is little emphasis within the industry and its consultancy and analyst supply network on the broader social and economic impacts of automobility and of the sector that provides it. The Global Automotive Industry addresses this need and is a first port of call for any academic, official or consultant wanting an overview of the state of the industry. An international team of specialist researchers, both from academia and business, review and analyse the key issues that make vehicle manufacturing still the world’s premier manufacturing sector, closely tied in with the fortunes of both established and newly emerging economies. In doing so, it covers issues related to manufacturing, both established practices as well as new developments; issues relating to distribution, marketing and retail, vehicle technologies and regulatory trends; and, crucially, labour practices and the people who build cars. In all this it explains both how the current situation arose and also likely future trajectories both in terms of social and regulatory trends, as the technological, marketing and labour practice responses to those, leading in many cases to the development of new business models. Key features Provides a global overview of the automotive industry, covering its current state and considering future challenges Contains contributions from international specialists in the automotive sector Presents current research and sets this in an historical and broader industry context Covers threats to the industry, including globalization, economic and environmental sustainability The Global Automotive Industry is a must-have reference for researchers and practitioners in the automotive industry and is an excellent source of information for business schools, governments, and graduate and undergraduate students in automotive engineering.

Children and old women have been accustomed to hear so many frightful things of the cloven-footed potentate, and have formed such diabolical ideas of his satanic majesty, exhibiting him in so many horrible and monstrous shapes, that really it were enough to frighten Beelzebub himself, were he by any accident to meet his prototype in the dark, dressed up in the several figures in which imagination has embodied him. And as regards men themselves, it might be presumed that the devil could not by any means terrify them half so much, were they actually to meet and converse with him face to face: so true it is that his satanic majesty is not near so black as he is painted. However useful the undertaking might prove, to give a true history of this "tyrant of the air," this "God of the world," this "terror and overseer of mankind," it is not our intention to become the devil's biographer, notwithstanding the facility with which the materials might be collected. Of the devil's origin, and the first rise of his family, we have sufficient authority on record; and, as regards his dealings, he has certainly always acted in the dark; though many of his doings both moral, political, ecclesiastical, and empirical, have left such strong impressions behind them, as to mark their importance in some transactions, even at the present period of the christian world. These discussions, however, we shall leave in the hands of their respective champions, in order to take, as we proceed, a cursory view of some of the diableries with which mankind, in imitation of this great master, has been infected, from the first ages of the world.

The Cadillac story is more than the story of a car company. It is, in many ways, the story of the American automobile industry itself—which, as much as any industry, drove America’s growth in the twentieth century and defined who we are as a people. For generations of Americans, Cadillac epitomized expansive prosperity. This illustrated history of Cadillac presents all the triumphs and failures of the marque’s last sixty years; from the good times, through the disastrous 1980s, and up to the current reconstitution of the brand.

Holley Carburetors

How to Rebuild

Publisher: CarTech Inc

ISBN: 161325198X

Category: Transportation

Page: 144

During the muscle car wars of the 1960s, Holley carburetors emerged as the carbs to have because of their easy-to-tune design, abundance of parts, and wide range of sizes. The legendary Double Pumper, the universal 600-cfm 1850 models, the Dominator, and now the Avenger have stood the test of time and are the leading carburetors in the high-performance engine market. To many enthusiasts, the operation, components, and rebuilding procedures remain a mystery. Yet, many carburetors need to be rebuilt and properly set up for a particular engine package. Veteran engine building expert and automotive author Mike Mavrigian guides you through each important stage of the rebuilding process, so you have the best operating carburetor for a particular engine and application. In addition, he explains carb identification as well as idle, mid-range and high-speed circuit operation, specialty tools, and available parts. You often need to replace gaskets, worn parts, and jets for the prevailing weather/altitude conditions or a different engine setup. Mavrigian details how to select parts then disassemble, assemble, and calibrate all of the major Holley carburetors. In an easy-to-follow step-by-step format, he shows you each critical stage for cleaning sensitive components and installing parts, including idle screws, idle air jets, primary/secondary main jets, accelerator pumps, emulsion tubes, and float bowls. He also includes the techniques for getting all of the details right so you have a smooth-running engine. Holley carburetor owners need a rebuilding guide for understanding, disassembling, selecting parts, and reassembling their carbs, so the carb then delivers exceptional acceleration, quick response, and superior fuel economy. With Holley Carburetors: How to Rebuild you can get the carb set up and performing at its best. And, if desired, you can move to advanced levels of tuning and modifying these carbs. If you're looking for the one complete book that helps you quickly and expertly rebuild your Holley and get back on the road, this book is a vital addition to your performance library.

The Rules of the Game

Jutland and British Naval Command

Author: Andrew Gordon

Publisher: Naval Institute Press

ISBN: 1612512321

Category: History

Page: 736

Foreword by Admiral Sir John Woodward. When published in hardcover in 1997, this book was praised for providing an engrossing education not only in naval strategy and tactics but in Victorian social attitudes and the influence of character on history. In juxtaposing an operational with a cultural theme, the author comes closer than any historian yet to explaining what was behind the often described operations of this famous 1916 battle at Jutland. Although the British fleet was victorious over the Germans, the cost in ships and men was high, and debates have raged within British naval circles ever since about why the Royal Navy was unable to take advantage of the situation. In this book Andrew Gordon focuses on what he calls a fault-line between two incompatible styles of tactical leadership within the Royal Navy and different understandings of the rules of the games.

The Tailfin Years

The tail fin era is one of the most recognized in automotive styling, and the influence spread worldwide. As everyone knows, designer Harley Earl took his inspiration from World War II fighter aircraft and the fins grew bolder and larger as competing manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon to produce the most striking vehicle, until they became almost outrageous and turned people off, and then became less prominent again through the 1960s. Cadillac: The Tail Fin Years, takes an in-depth look at the years from 1948 to 1964. A chapter is devoted to each model year and provides unique facts and features, historical information, specifications, production numbers, options, prices, and more. And of course, the real heart of the book is the many colorful illustrations drawn from the exciting original sales and marketing materials, original factory photos, and examples of well-preserved originals still around today. Often the models featured are those that we all wish we had! Also featured are the famous jewelry ads through this special era in automotive history.
